Traditional vietnamese painting

Personnal project - three weeks
Hoan Tu Ban Studio - August 2013

During one of my trips to Vietnam I attended a traditional vietnamese painting course held at artist Hoan Tu Ban’s studio, a close friend. This painting technique is quite particular: the lacquer is composed of pigments, resin and petrol and is layed down in multiple coats. It is then water sanded to reveal lower coats and colors. There are numerous other techniques associated with this lacquer, such as the inclusion of egg shells or gold leaf. This course led me to discover a new a facett of Vietnam. I met a number of vietnamese artists which I helped with setting up an art exhibit at the Hué contemporary art center. I came back for another course the following year.
